Jitter artifact on lenticular applications

Product

Any output device doing lenticular work

Symptoms

  • Jitter artifact on lenticular applications. The artifact appears worse when there is more head tilt.
  • Note that the artifact is only visible after you output the plate, and examine the image through the lens (lenticular) material.

This example shows the transition in a lenticular ‘flip’ between a solid white and solid black image.

Cause

Each swath does not start at the same point around the drum. This causes a jitter artifact. The following diagram illustrates the effect.

Solution

  1. Adjust the head tilt. This may eliminate the problem. For instructions, see Adjusting Tilt on a Thermal Head.
Note: The fine tilt adjustment for lenticular printing is 1.5 microns (1/6 of a pixel) or less.
  2. For Magnus 800 platesetters, there is a TMCE firmware version that enables interleaving and overwriting patterns. Ensure that the device is running this TMCE firmware and output the plate using pattern id 3.
Note: This doubles the imaging time.
