Before the auto focus servo system can operate it must determine the mechanical and electrical integrity of its actuator hardware. The central method of checking the actuator hardware is through a 'focus initialization' operation. This occurs automatically at system power up and may be invoked manually with the 'foc init' command.
| Focus initialization moves the auto focus lens tube actuator through various expected degrees of freedom while using all possible means to reduce the risk of lens damage due to excessive acceleration caused by unexpected malfunctions.
| This error is one of several that can occur during the initialization process One of the main 'recoverable' ways focus initialization can fail is when the head is not sitting horizontally. In this case, gravitational forces may overcome the small (but safe) accelerations used during initialization and cause an apparent failure.
| In most cases however, a failure to initialize the auto focus lens tube actuator will indicate a serious hardware problem and the head will likely need repaired or replacement.
