The auto focus lens tube position sensing device is known to product developers as the 'LVDT sensor'. This sensor supplies feedback to the auto focus servo system and is critical to its operation.
| This error can occur only when the lvdt sensor is calibrated. The LVDT is calibrated under two circumstances.
- When the thermal head powers up
- When a user issues a 'foc cal lvdt' monitor command
| If the error occurs during system power up it will be displayed on the monitor before the sign on message (together with any other start up errors). When an LVDT calibration fails this is one of the possible errors. It indicates a serious malfunction in auto focus hardware. If the error persists after several attempts at the 'foc cal lvdt' command the head will likely need to be replaced.
| The thermal head firmware 'remembers this error and is aware that the LVDT calibration has failed on the last attempt. This will cause several other auto focus monitor commands to fail. A typical example is the 'foc init' command. The equivalent of a 'foc init' command always occurs at power up provided the LVDT calibration was successful first.
| A failed LVDT calibration will ensure that the auto focus servo subsystem will not initialize. An uninitialized servo will cause several other auto focus commands to fail. However, a failed LVDT calibration is not the only reason a focus servo initialization may fail.
