Firmware change for Qualstar AIT-2 tape libraries used with Brisque systems

Product

  • Brisque® 4.0
  • Brisque Serve 4.0
  • Timna™ 3.0
  • Qualstar® AIT-2 tape libraries
  • Sony® AIT-2 SCSI tape drives

Platform

  • E30—Victory
  • 43P–140—Tiger1
  • 43P–150—Tiger2
  • F50—Wildcat (2 and 4 CPUs)
  • 44P–170—Hammerhead
  • 6F1—Condor (2, 4, and 6 CPUs)

Operating system

IBM® AIX 4.2.1 or IBM AIX 4.3.3

Background

The firmware that is currently installed in Qualstar AIT-2 tape libraries and in Sony AIT-2 SCSI tape drives is not compatible with one another.

As a result, the following problems can occur when you use the LEGATO NetWorker® application:

  • You cannot unload Sony AIT-2 SCSI tapes and error 69 appears.
  • A Sony AIT-2 SCSI tape drive becomes disabled.

This procedure describes how to change the existing firmware on both a Qualstar AIT-2 library and a Sony AIT-2 SCSI drive, which prevents the problems mentioned earlier from occurring.

Requirements

Qualstar AIT-2 tape library firmware version 2.18,
TLS LIB FW2.18 upgrade:

  • Executive Board III PCB (Creo p/n 609-00044)
  • Executive Board IV PCB (Creo p/n 609-00045)

Sony AIT-2 SCSI tape drive version 0.1F firmware,
AIT-2 DRV FW 010F UPDATE TAPE (FCO)* (Creo p/n 610-00012)

Procedure

To determine which firmware to order, check the current firmware version and the Executive Board Level of the Qualstar AIT-2 tape library:

  1. At the AIX command line prompt, navigate to the directory /etc/LGTOuscsi/.
  2. Type inquire -c and then press Enter.
  3. On the front panel of the Qualstar AIT-2 tape library, press the Menu button.
  4. Press the down arrow button to navigate to the Maintenance menu and press Enter.
  5. Press the down arrow button twice to navigate to Display Revision and press Enter.
The following is an example of the information that appears onscreen:
    - Date : 12/06/2003
    - Part Number :700115 (Executive Board IV)

    Or,
    - Part Number :700105 (Executive Board III)
    - Revision : 2.18
    (firmware version)

To change firmware on a Qualstar AIT-2 tape library:

  1. From the Qualstar AIT-2 tape library PCB Executive III or PCB Executive Board IV, remove the existing U4 firmware chip.
  2. For a Qualstar AIR tape library PCB Executive III, install the new firmware chip TLS LIB FW2.18 upgrade (Creo p/n 609-00044).
For a Qualstar AIR tape library PCB Executive IV, install the new firmware chip TLS LIB FW2.18 upgrade (Creo p/n 609-00045).
  3. Reconfigure the Qualstar AIT-2 tape library—follow the steps provided in the Solution section of Qualstar Tape Library Lost Configuration.

To change firmware on a Sony AIT-2 SCSI drive:

  1. Shut down Brisque, Brisque Serve or Timna server.
  2. Shut down, and then start up the Qualstar AIT-2 library.
  3. Open the library door.
  4. In the top drive of the Sony AIT-2 SCSI drive, insert the firmware tape
AIT-2 DRV FW 010F UPDATE TAPE (FCO)* (Creo p/n 610-00012).
While the firmware loads, the drive’s three LEDs flash for approximately seven seconds, and flash once again for approximately two seconds when the drive is verifying the firmware.
The entire firmware loading process takes approximately three minutes to complete. When it is finished, the firmware tape ejects automatically.
  5. For each of the remaining Sony AIT-2 SCSi tape drives, repeat steps 3 and 4.
  6. When all firmware has been loaded onto the tape drives, shut down and then start up the Qualstar AIT-2 tape library.
  7. Reboot Brisque, Brisque Serve or Timna.
  8. To verify that the Qualstar AIT-2 tape library and all Sony AIT-2 SCSI tape drives have the new firmware versions loaded:
    • At the AIX command line prompt, navigate to the directory /etc/LGTOuscsi/.
    • Type inquire -c and then press Enter.
  9. Return the firmware tape FW 010F (Creo p/n 610-00012) to stock.
