| NOTES: This proofing device is fed with 400 dpi CT (Continous Tone) TIFFs from Prinergy. For best quality with regard to serif type, a Prinergy system will need Patch #69, which will improve anti-aliasing. The Pictroproof can also be driven with software that runs on a G4 Mac. This software can also be driven by Prinergy. | |
| What type of proofer is this? | |
It is a tabloid-extra (A3)
size proofer that is marketed as capable of producing contract
proofs. It comes with one of three front-ends:
|
|
| Connectivity: | |
| With all three front-ends, it is possible to drive the Pictroproof by spooling a 400 dpi CT TIFF file to a hot folder monitored by the Pictroproof RIP. | |
| Performance: | |
| It took about 10 minutes to RIP and print a tabloid-size proof from the Pictroproof. This field test was done with an AP RIP running on a Windows NT server box with 128 MB of RAM and a single 400mhz CPU. The Pictromatch running on a G4 is rumored to be much faster, capable of driving the Pictroproof at engine speed (which is very fast - under three minutes to image a tabloid-size proofer). Expect this proofer to give heavy competition to the proofers put out by IRIS Graphics. You can drive the Pictroproof with Level 3 Postscript output from Prinergy, but this should only be done for amusement's sake. The RIPing time speeds up considerably but you lose traps on output and the document output is shrunk by about 5%!! | |
| Usage: | |
| Qualification was done at Hemlock printers in Burnaby, BC, Canada. There are many sites in the field that either have or are looking to purchase a Pictroproof. | |
| Limitations: | |
| At present (March 5), fine-serif type doesn't look that great on output. However, quality is expected to improve with the imminent release of Patch #69 to Prinergy, which will improve the anti-aliasing of CT images. | |
