| NOTES: It's actually quite easy to connect to this type of proofer, as there has been connection at iMPAct sites well before Prinergy was ever released. There are only two things to watch out for: 1) Imation has its own type of color-matching (ICC profiles) that is basically incompatible with the Prinergy color management system. Some customer won't be too happy about that. and 2) Make sure the Rainbow does NOT use the "Direct Interface Software," which is run off the Mac. Instead, make the connection via Windows NT, called "Controller v5.0" software. Well, you can probably use the Mac way, but it will probably be really slow and the customer will blame you and say it's all your fault. | |
| What type of proofer is this? | |
| This is a contract proofer that is very similiar to the IRIS Realist. That is to say, it's a 300 dpi continuous tone proofer that can take a four-up file (21"x28"). What you create from Prinergy is a TIFF file with RLE compression and 256 levels (Continuous Tone). Note that you will need Patch #69 to get the fine-serif type to look okay. | |
| Connectivity: | |
| If the proofer is hooked up to a Windows NT server, then the proofer can be defined as a NT print device. If it's a Mac that the proofer is hooked up to, then you're looking at some sort of hot folder or manual transfer of TIFF files to the Mac workstation from a Prinergy job volume. | |
| Performance: | |
| Since the Rainbow takes 20 minutes to make a proof, and since we are only spooling 300 dpi files, the RIP should easy keep up with the engine of the proofer. Note to Creo sales: If the customer is claiming they are pumping out 20+ proofs an eight-hour shift, they might be, um, exaggerating. Ten is more like it. | |
| Usage: | |
| Lots of these proofers in the field are connected to iMPAct workflows. There is at least one known connection of a Rainbow 4700 to a Prinergy system, name of customer is Wilcox Press. | |
| Limitations: | |
| As stated in notes, there is no integration whatsoever between Imation's color management system and Prinergy's. This is a known annoyance/concern with customers. | |
