| NOTES: This plotter is the Roland equivalent of the EPSON 9000. Indeed, it actually uses Epson's printheads. As this is a wide plotter (54 inches), it is important that the customer has a powerful enough server to power the RIP that will drive at 720 dpi by 720 dpi. | |
| What type of proofer is this? | |
| It is one of the six-color type that has become popular (see Epson, Sherpa, HP5000). Many people use this type of plotter for low-grade contract proofing. However, CreoScitex does not support these types of plotters as contract proofers. The customer must contact outside color management consultants if they want someone to "own" the job of matching proof to press. See the "Epson FAQ" for sales for more information about properly setting customer's expectations. | |
| Connectivity: | |
| Unscreened 720 dpi TIFF through a third-party RIP. (Note to system integrators: You can use the Epson 9000 - Best RIP process plan to drive this device, without any changes at all except to change media width to 54".) Currently there are two RIPs qualified for use with the Roland Hi-Fi: Best RIP and Colorchoice. Try to get the customer to buy the Best RIP, since the Colorchoice RIP is the "bundled" RIP that always comes with the Roland and it is a very simple (read: cheap) RIP with extremely limited capabilities. The Best RIP has a proven track record. (Translation: customers who use the Best RIP don't tend to phone the CreoScitex Response Center very often.) | |
| Performance: | |
| Minimum hardware specs for the box that has the RIP: Dual 650-mhz CPUs, 1 GB of RAM, three SCSI drives, system drive 7,200 RPM, data drive @7,200 RPM, temp drive 10,000 RPM. The OS must be Windows NT or Windows 2000, NOT Windows 98. This is a 54" inch color plotter, not a letter-size B&W printer. Using Windows 98 will cause the RIP to attempt to chew it's way through a 150 MB compressed TIFF file, only to bomb with an out-of-memory error after 20 minutes. | |
| Usage: | |
| When doing the ITP for sign-off, try to get the nice, expensive stock for the printing (PETG). Try to avoid the cheap stuff (PCM150). If you are stuck with the cheap stuff, try to avoid printing rich blacks. There's a reason why one stock is 3 times more expensive than the other. | |
| Limitations: | |
| Just the usual. The vendor always says it's a contract proofer. We say it's not. | |
