Archiver sets the tape state to “Complete” too soon

Product

Kodak® Prinergy®, all versions

Operating system

  • Microsoft® Windows Server® 2003
  • Microsoft® Windows Server® 2000

Symptoms

In the Removable Storage Manager (RSM), the tape state is Complete, but there is still capacity left on the tape for archiving.

Cause

Hardware issues (for example, a dirty or damaged tape drive or a damaged tape), or a SCSI or controller error.

Solution

Investigate and resolve the hardware problem, and then manually update the free space for the tape using SQLPlus.

Note: If a bad block error caused Archiver to set the tape state to Complete, do not manually update the tape state (leave it set to complete).

To update the free space for the tape using SQLPlus:

  1. Open Media Manager and check the value in the Used Space column for the tape. Based on the used space, estimate how much free space is left.
  2. For example, if you have a 100 GB AIT III tape and 50 GB is listed in Media Manager under Used Space, estimate the free space to be 50 GB.

    Note: You don't need to know the exact amount of free space. When you run Archiver again, the tape device will read the tape and send the actual free space value to Archiver. Archiver will then update Media Manager with the correct value.

  3. Open a command-line window and run SQLplus.
  4. Type select * from dbcs_archivemedium where archivemedmname = 'TapeToBeUpdated';

  5. A table of the storage tapes appears, showing the free space (ARCHIVEMEDMFREEGB) available.
  6. Type update dbcs_archivemedium set ARCHIVEMEDMFREEGB = 50 where archivemedmname = 'TapeToBeUpdated';
    Replace 50 with the estimated free space value that you determined in step 1. Replace TapeToBeUpdated with the number of the tape that you want to update.
  7. Repeat step 3 to see the change.
  8. If the change is correct, type commit.
  9. Manually remove the tape from the device.
  10. In RSM, perform the following steps:
    1. Ensure that the media pool is not set to Deallocate to Free Pool.
    2. Important: If the Deallocate to Free Pool setting is selected and the tape is still in the device, RSM will deallocate the tape and then prepare it, overwriting the tape with a new medium.

    3. Deallocate the tape.
    4. Delete the tape.
    5. Insert the tape manually into the device.

    6. It appears in the Import pool in RSM.
    7. Drag the tape to the appropriate archive pool.
    8. Restart the Archiver JTP to allocate the tape.
  11. In Media Manager, check the free space and status of the tape. It should be the amount that you entered and the status should be Allocated.
  12. Archive files to the tape again, and then check the free space. It should reset to the correct amount.
