17732 HEAD: Unable to balance stroke to better than head bpmaxerr %

This error message is generated if at least one of the measured light levels in the swath is above the nvs setpoint head bpmaxerr percent of the target light at the end of the stroke calibration procedure.

Go through the following actions:

  • Run strokcal.spt script to see if there are any weak pixels. If there are weak pixels near either end of the swath, it may be possible to chop the swath. See Adjusting the Beam Blockers on a TH1.x head.
  • The stroke profile is also very dependent on beam pointing. Run getcontr.spt script to determine if it may be possible to improve the stroke profile by changing the head bposn parameter. Pick the beam position with the lowest light leakage and maximum output power.
  • Check the scorr table values with the scorr command to see if the table is corrupt. Unless the scorr table is being used to compensate for a media issue, the scorr table can safely be initiated to all zeroes.

While all new heads are capable of balancing to within 3 percent, bpmaxerr can safely be increased to 5 percent with minimal risk of artifacts on the plates. If tuning the head as described does not improve the profile by running the bpmaxerr parameter at 3 or 5 percent, then it is likely the head must be replaced. Always consult with a Thermal Head Specialist before replacing a thermal head.

If this error is generated, but the stroke profile graph does not show any problems, check the links below to see if any of them apply:
