Indicator (Red LED)
The OMC is a control board located in the Standard
Controller. The board is a slave to an IBM PC AT and is controlled by an INTEL 80C196. It
controls the imagesetter mechanics, except for the dynamic optics carriage, lead screw
motor, and carriage detectors.
The INTEL 80C196 is a 16 bit, 12 MHz zero wait state controller. Most of the board logic
is based on xilinx PGA.
A red LED on the board lights in the case that the XILINX is not loaded.

The 80C196 is also used for:
A 10 bit positive/negative Analog Voltage Measurement (external circuit of 5 volt
reference voltage and analog MUX is added).
Frequency measurement and pulse count is established through HSI-0 HSI-1. (Two external
selectors and frequency dividers are added).
| Analog PWM Output | used as an Analog reference to the Modulator. |
| HSO | output is used as a clock source for stepper. |
Loading xilinx and WCS is done while 80C196 is in ONCE mode,
i.e., electrically disconnected from the board. This is also the case in power up. ONCE
mode protects the controller when the WCS is not loaded. It allows the
CPU and the PC host to work on a common bus. The ONCE control circuit allows the PC to
select 80C196 mode.
The OMC board uses an 8 byte address area on the PC I/O port.
The control register allows the PC to control the OMC board (reset, ONCE mode control,
load xilinx/WCS, and read statuses).
It is a bi-directional message buffer for communication.
One wait state can be generated to the PC host under command to ensure good communication
with PC.
Data Interface is established by two xilinx PGA for translation of 16 bit 80C196 bus to 8
bit PC bus. The PGA includes:
On board address decoding is performed by xilinx PGA. It is also used for I/O port decoding, wait state generation and 8/16 bit bus width select.
Two 26 pin high density D-TYPE host connectors:
Two ECL RS-232 ports connected to PC on com3 com4 serial ports.
Select one of two ECL Expose Signal ports to expose.
Select up to six beams to expose via RS-422 signals.
80C196 can measure 21 Analog signals:
It is used to measure power supplies, Analog modulator value
and Analog
feedback from power drivers.
The light intensity analog input has variable gain.
SINE and COSINE PWM SPINNER control signals are generated using xilinx PGA. The sine and cosine are calculated by 80C196 controller and stored in the spinner RAM. Four different spinner intensities can be stored at once. SPINNER frequency is controlled between 800 - 24000 RPM.
The 40 digital signal inputs give the 80C196 plotter status
feedback.
The 3.5 volt input threshold and pull-ups to 12 volt receive protection against noise.
The 16 input clock signals are connected to the 80C196 High
Speed Input through a selector. A clock divider (up to 64) allows high frequency
measurement.
Interrupts in this input are used for pulses count.
Pulses that are measured in this way are: Film and encoders spinner frequency and
feedback, index, sweep-on and 18 MHz oscillator.
I2C interface is based on PHILIPS 8584 parallel interface. It is used to control SHUTTER, AC motors, cassette E2PROM, digital feedback from motor driver and Analog I/O from power converter driver.
External 16 bit Interrupt controller is added to 80C196 interrupt machine. This controller is performed in xilinx PGA and allows input signals to be masked/enabled and generate interrupts under any Input change. The controller also includes hardware acknowledge and diagnostic path.
The on board CRC chip allows testing of fast signals like
spinner PWM sine and cosine, various internal pattern programs and expose signals from the
HOST.
The OMC can generate types of internal patterns:
Laser control is divided into three serial stages:
The D/A is loaded by the 80C196 or synchronized to the spinner encoder clock.
The board has a 256 byte I2C EEPROM with board version and other parameters. The EEPROM can be read from the motherboard.
