Removing and installing the trailing edge clamp actuator on Magnus 800

Product

Magnus 800

Background

The function of the trailing edge clamp (TEC) actuator is to secure the rear (trailing edge) of the plate to the TECs.

This procedure describes how to remove and install the TEC actuator.

Procedure

Removing the TEC actuator:

  1. In Magnus Controller, ensure that the TECs are on the drum.
  2. In Magnus Controller, click Raise Platform to raise the platesetter loading platform:

  3. Shut down the air supply leading to the platesetter.
  4. Remove the upper front panel.
  5. Remove punch slug bin.
  6. Remove the alignment system.
  7. Open right side door.
  8. Disconnect the Molex connector (TEC on-off) from the left side of the TEC actuator:

  9. Remove the two screws that secure the TEC home and away detector bracket to the left side of TEC actuator:
Note: Before removing the bracket, mark its location with a pencil.

  10. Remove the two screws that secure the TEC home and away detector bracket to the right side of the TEC actuator:
Note: Before removing the bracket, mark its location with a pencil.

  11. On the right side of the TEC actuator, disconnect the two air tubes (TEC horizontal ext. and TEC horizontal ret.) from the TEC actuator cylinder:

  12. Two TEC actuator pins (one on each end of the TEC actuator) secure the TEC actuator to the TEC actuator cylinder. Each TEC actuator pin is held into place with two e-rings.
Use a flat head screwdriver to pry off the e-rings:

Be careful not to drop the pins’ washers into the platesetter:

  13. Push out the TEC actuator pins:

  14. On the left side of the TEC actuator, remove the four screws that secure the TEC actuator to the optomech:

The outer screw also secures the TEC actuator leading pin in its place. Dispose of the rib washers, because they cannot be reused.
  15. Remove the two screws securing the left and right safety switches to the optomech:
Note: Before removing the safety switches, mark their location with a pencil.

  16. Extract the TEC actuator by sliding it out from the platesetter and then by rotating it 90°:

Installing the TEC actuator:

Important: Unless otherwise stated, coat all screws in Loctite® 242.

  1. Install the TEC actuator into the platesetter. On the left side of the actuator is a leading pin. Make sure the pin is inserted into its hole on the optomech:
  2. On the left side of the TEC actuator, install the two screws that secure the TEC actuator to the optomech. (View image)
  3. Reinstall the TEC actuator cylinder pins, the silver washers, and the e-rings. (View image)
  4. On the right side of the TEC actuator, connect the two air tubes (TEC horizontal ext. and TEC horizontal ret.) to the TEC actuator cylinder. (View image)
  5. Install the two screws that secure the TEC home and away detector bracket to the right side of the TEC actuator. Align the bracket with the pencil mark. (View image)
  6. Install the two screws that secure the TEC home and away detector bracket to the left side of TEC actuator. (View image)
  7. Connect the two connectors (TEC on off and TEC horizontal) to the left side of the TEC actuator. Align the bracket with the pencil mark. (View image)
  8. Reinstall the two safet switches. (View image)
  9. Close the right side door.
  10. Reinstall alignment system.
  11. Reinstall punch slug bin.
  12. Reinstall the upper front panel.
  13. Manually close the loading platform.
  14. Open the air supply leading to the platesetter.

Test

  1. In Magnus Controller, locate the left and right TEC actuator vertical detector dialog boxes.
  2. Make sure the TEC actuator is at home position.
  3. Locate the TEC actuator valve and send the TEC actuator to away position:
    • The home detector’s status should display off.
    • The away detector’s status should display on.
If the detectors display a different status, adjust the detector brackets on the platesetter, until the status is correct
(Home = off; Away = on).
