Unlicensed acccess in Service Shell 3.3

Product

Service Shell 3.3

Operating system

Microsoft® Windows®

Symptoms

As of April 15th 2007, it will not be possible to access Service Shell versions from 2.5 to 3.2 using passwords. Service Shell version 2.5 will not work effective April 15th. For Service Shell versions from 2.6 to 3.2, feature licensing and dongles are required

Cause

Service Shell 2.5 password protection will not work as of April 15th, 2007. Feature licensing and dongles are required to access Service Shell 2.6 and later, to protect unauthorized use of Service Shell. For more information, refer to: Password needed to start Service Shell client and Service Shell news items.

Solution

The first preference is to install CFL on the customer’s workstation. However, due to time pressures and technical problems encountered when rolling out Feature Licensing support to the field, a new version of Service Shell (3.3) is available. It provides a basic access level for sites that do not yet have Feature Licensing installed. This exception applies particularly for Shared Maintenance customers with MPE machines; these customers may require Service Shell access to be arranged quickly, or they may have older workstations where CFL could be problematic.

Version 3.3 of Service Shell will:

  • allow unlicensed access to:
    • Device Monitor
    • Log Viewer
    • Service Shell Options
    • Host Configuration wizard
  • not allow unlicensed access to:
    • Test Plot
    • Scripts
    • Firmware Downloads
    • Loop test
    • Version Checker
    • BART
    • Device Change Tracker

Service Shell 3.3 will allow unlicensed access when both of these conditions are satisfied:

  • The feature licensing server (CFL server) is either not installed, or is disabled in the Device Management or Task Manager
    AND
  • A new registry key (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Creo\ServiceShell" value="UptimeUser" data=DWORD:1) is created and set. Contact your local Product Support or Response Center for more information.

Note:
When the CFL server is not running, there is no way to access the more advanced features of the local Service Shell client, even with a service dongle.
Unlicensed access is impossible when the Feature Licensing server is running. Therefore, for GMCE machines and many MCE machines that require feature licensing and customer dongles, customer access will only be possible by generating and pasting the appropriate service license key from this site.
