Thermal3 Command
bbs balance

Description Perform a beam-balance ( blocking ) and initialize the stroke table. Note that the monitor command bbs mode (initiate|query|abort) and the monitor command bbs balance perform an identical beam-balance. However the monitor command bbs mode (initiate|query|abort) performs a non-blocking beam-balance while the monitor command bbs balance performs a blocking beam-balance. The non-blocking beam-balance is intended to allow the host to perform a beam-balance while executing other functionality ( i.e. initializing the focus ).

Since the light valve driver is a bipolar driver, a beam-balance is required for both the high and low polarity. The beam-balance for the high polarity is interleaved with the beam-balance for the low polarity. The interleaving of the beam-balances has the effect of alternating between performing a stroke profile of the high polarity and performing a stroke profile of the low polarity.

Each beam-balance is performed by determining the stroke profiles at the maximum pixel level and the minimum pixel level. A target profile is then calculated based on the NVS parameters med <media index> beamslope <polarity>, med <media index> beamcurve <polarity>, med <media index> beampiston, med <media index> scorr <polarity / spot quad> and the stroke profiles. The beam-balance then attempts to set the pixel level for all pixel quads in the stroke such that the stroke profile matches the target profile within the error configured by the NVS parameter bbs maximumerror.

If the beam-balance is successful, the stroke table is automatically saved by the NVS parameter med <media index> stroke <polarity / spot quad>.

Note that the beam-balance will close the shutter. However, the beam-balance will not configure the laser diode driver, beam-pointing driver or light valve driver.

Notes Thermal 1.0 / 1.7x equivalents:
  • The monitor command bbs balance is comparable to stroke cal.
  • Unlike the monitor command stroke cal, bbs balance does not turn on the laser.
  • Thermal 1.0 / 1.7x implements a configureable offset and gain for the beam-balance sensor.
  • Thermal 1.0 / 1.7x implements a unipolar driver.

Thermal 2 equivalents:
  • The monitor command bbs balance is comparable to bbs balance [nocal].
  • Thermal 2 implements a configureable offset and gain for the beam-balance sensor.
  • Thermal 2 implements a unipolar driver.
