Removing and installing the alignment system motors

Product

Kodak® punch conveyor

Background

The two alignment system motors (upper and lower) are located at the center of the alignment system and are responsible for moving the alignment system registration pins.

This procedure describes how to remove and install the alignment system motors.

Requirements

  • Hex key set
  •

    Procedure

Note: During this procedure, you will be removing a number of screws. Make sure to save these screws for future installation purposes.

This procedure includes the following sections:

    Before you begin

    1. Quit the Magnus 400 Controller software, and turn off the platesetter.
    2. To enable easy access to the rear of the punch conveyor (punch cover side), slide the punch conveyor out from the punch conveyor guides (on the rear of the platesetter), and then push it away from the platesetter.
    3. On the underside of the punch cover, disconnect the orange air pressure tube.

    4. With both hands, lift the punch cover up and off the conveyor, and set aside.

    5. Remove the four screws (two on each side) that secure the punch cover frame to the punch conveyor, and remove the punch cover frame.

Warning: Do not restart the platesetter or software with the punch cover frame removed. The detectors do not function properly when exposed to ambient lighting and can cause MSB_C communication errors.

    6. Remove the alignment system, and place it upside-down on a work table.

    Removing the lower motor assembly

    1. On the alignment system, remove the three screws that secure the alignment system motor assembly cover to the alignment system. Remove the motor assembly cover, and set it aside.

    2. Disconnect the lower motor connector from the lower motor.

    3. Remove the three screws that secure the lower motor assembly to the alignment system, and set them aside.

    4. Carefully lift the lower motor assembly out of the alignment system, and place on the work table.

    5. On the lower motor assembly, remove the three screws that regulate the tension on the lower motor pulley, and set them aside.

    6. Loosen the two set screws on the lower motor pulley, and remove the pulley.

    7. On the lower motor assembly, remove the four screws that secure the lower motor bracket to the lower motor. Remove the lower motor, and set the screws and bracket aside.

    Removing the upper motor assembly

Note: If you need to replace the upper motor assembly only, remove the entire lower motor assembly first—do not take it apart, and then remove the upper motor assembly. If you need to replace both motors, after you remove the lower motor assembly, proceed to step 3.

    1. On the alignment system, remove the three screws that secure the alignment system motor assembly cover to the alignment system. Remove the motor assembly cover, and set it aside.
    2. Remove the three screws that secure the lower motor assembly to the alignment system, and then carefully lift the entire lower motor assembly (lower motor, bracket, and pulley) up and out of the alignment system, and set it aside.
    3. Disconnect the upper motor connector from the upper motor.

    4. Remove the three screws that secure the upper motor assembly to the alignment system, and set them aside.

    5. Carefully lift the upper motor assembly (with upper motor coupling) up and out of alignment system, and place it on the work table.

    6. Loosen the set screw on the upper motor coupling, and remove the coupling.

    7. On the upper motor assembly, remove the four screws that secure the upper motor bracket to the upper motor. Remove the upper motor, and set the screws and bracket aside.

    Installing the upper motor assembly

Note: If you need to install both the upper and lower alignment system motors, you must install the upper motor first. If you need to install only the lower alignment system motor, see Installing the lower alignment system motor.

    1. Slide the upper motor coupling onto the axle of the new upper motor.
    2. On the new upper motor, reinstall the upper motor bracket with the four screws that you removed earlier.
    3. Reinstall the upper motor bracket (with upper motor assembly and coupling) on the alignment system with the three screws that you removed earlier.
    4. Reconnect the upper motor connector to the upper motor.

    Installing the lower motor assembly

    1. On the new lower motor, reinstall the lower motor bracket with the four screws that you removed earlier.
    2. Reinstall the lower motor bracket on the alignment system with the three screws that you removed earlier.
    3. On the lower motor assembly, reinstall the pulley, and tighten the set screws.
    4. Make sure there is adequate tension on the pulley for it to operate properly, and tighten the three tension screws.
    5. Reconnect the alignment system lower motor connector to the alignment system lower motor.
    6. Reinstall the alignment system motor assembly cover on the alignment system motor assembly.

    Completing the installation

    1. Reinstall the alignment system on the punch conveyor.
    2. Reinstall the punch cover frame.
    3. Reinstall the punch cover.
    4. On the underside of the punch cover, reconnect the orange air tube.
    5. Push the punch conveyor back toward the platesetter. Use the punch conveyor guides on the rear of the platesetter to align the punch conveyor with the platesetter.
    6. Turn on the platesetter, and start the Magnus 400 Controller software.
