This page contains theory of operation for the overall VLF engine. For details of specific parts of the engine, see Balance weights | Carriage | Drum | Edge detection strip | Encoder | Engine mounts | LEC assembly | Plate flyoff sensor | Registration blocks | Roller assembly | TEC assembly | Temperature sensors

The main functions of the engine include:
See:
The VLF engine comes in two mechanically distinct sizes:
The first two numbers indicate the maximum plate length, in inches (wrap plate cutoff dimension around the drum). The last two numbers represent the maximum plate width in inches (dimension along the drum).
| Model | Engine Size | Maximum plate size |
| 4557 | 5080 | 45"x 57" (1143 mm x 1397 mm) |
| 5067 | 5080 | 50"x 67" (1270 mm x 1702 mm) |
| 5080 | 5080 | 50"x 80" (1270 mm x 2032 mm) |
| 5467 | 5880 | 54"x 67" (1372 mm x 1702 mm) |
| 5880 | 5880 | 58"x 80" (1473 mm x 2032 mm) |
Each machine is shipped with a dongle which contains hard-coded information on the model. This prevents the users from upgrading the model by simply changing some NVS parameters.
The main differences between the 5080 and 5880 engines are:
The engines for the VLF Trendsetter and the VLF Platesetter are very similar. They share the same:
The main differences are:
The drum, encoder disk, drum pins, pillow blocks, tracks, registration blocks, ballscrew drive pulleys and frame are carefully aligned and measured for mechanical accuracy. These measurements are part of the geometric correction values used to ensure image accuracy and repeatability. Any adjustments made to the mechanical alignment of the drum or encoder disk or track mounting requires a full geometric accuracy test and recalibration. Change the mechanical setup only after consulting Creo engineering personnel.
The engines are set up for one of two ranges of plate thickness when they leave the production floor:
The engines can be reconfigured in the field for either range.
For green and HRX heads, the depth of focus is large enough do to the full range with the factory settings.
For thermal heads, follow the procedure for setting the focus offset using a
0.012" plate or a 0.016" plate to set up properly for the
0.006"–0.0016" and 0.010"–0-0.020" ranges respectively.
