For full details on how to troubleshoot this error, see Troubleshooting error 02317, The laser beam was not detected.
01 Dec 2006: Always drain the TH2 head before shipping or storage More...
If you return or store a TH2 head, you must drain the coolant first. If you do not, the coolant may freeze during transport, pressure may build during storage, or corrosion may occur during storage. All these situations cause internal leaks and cracks in the head cooling system.
This is particularly critical for thermal 2.7 heads because the laser diode is cooled directly, and therefore can be permanently damaged by any expansion in the cooling system.
The draining kit (part number 50-2465A) is included with every head, so there is no need to order any parts in advance. For the full procedure, see Draining the Coolant from a TH1 or TH2 Head.

08 Dec 2005: Trendsetter NEWS thermal head 1.7 to 2.x upgrade procedures for MPE and MCE More...
The new Trendsetter 800 II/NEWS MCE Thermal Head 1.7 to 2.x Upgrade Procedure was created primarily to document how to upgrade a Trendsetter 800 II-based output device with the X-speed (eXtra fast) option. However, it also applies to upgrading from a TH1.7 to a TH2 head on Trendsetter NEWS MCE-based output devices, a procedure that has not been formally documented until now.
Because this new procedure applies only to MCE-based output devices, it does not replace the existing Trendsetter NEWS TH1.7-to-TH2 Upgrade Procedure. This document has simply been renamed to Trendsetter NEWS MPE Thermal Head 1.7-to-2.x Upgrade Procedure to distinguish it from the new MCE procedure. In addition, it has been updated with the latest safety information for installing TH2 heads on MPE output devices.
Both of these documents are posted on the Procedures and Installation pages.

27 Oct 2005: TH2 v1.05c firmware defect can cause solid stripes on plate More...
A defect has been found in Thermal 2 head firmware version 1.05c that can cause solid stripes to be plotted on plate (see Example 1 and Example 2 ).
Affected customers: Any customer using 1.05c firmware on a head with the beam correction hardware may be affected by this artifact. All new and some RMA heads are affected. Head hardware can be verified using the following firmware commands:
>> redirect pass
>> th2 eng
>> th2 io read FFE0 1
The output will be the requested memory address followed by a four-digit hexadecimal number, for example: 0000FFE0: C342
If the last character of the four-digit number (2 in this example) is equal to 2, 3, 6, 7, A, B, E, or F, the head has the beam correction hardware and action should be taken to downgrade to head firmware version 1.04d. If the last character of the four-digit number is equal to 0, 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, C, or D, the head does not have the beam correction hardware and will run firmware version 1.05c with no problems.
Required action: If you have a customer with this firmware/hardware combination, downgrade the head firmware to version 1.04d using the following procedure:
>> th2 eng
>> th2 set sys firmwareversion 1.04
This downgrade will remove all features and fixes introduced by 1.05c. For a complete list of changes in 1.05c, please review the release notes. Note that it is not necessary to downgrade host firmware or workstation software.
Moving forward: 1.05d firmware is currently being tested and will be part of a controlled release available in early December. 1.05d includes all the features of 1.05c and fixes the defect. 1.05d should be installed as soon as it becomes available, because 1.04d does not contain the beam correction feature to extend the head lifetime.
TechPlanet DVD Version 4 N.3—30 Sep 2005
19 Sep 2005: Importance of lens cleaning and debris removal More...
Recently, some TH1.7 and TH2 heads have been returned with thick debris on the final lenses. This serves as a reminder that an effectively working debris removal system saves heads. Changes in media or exposure can result in dramatic changes in debris generation. Remember also that a dirty lens can significantly reduce power output and image quality. When troubleshooting an imaging related problem or when performing a PM, please check debris systems and final lenses. When checking the debris system, ensure that the flow marginal value is set correctly, as defined on page 4 of Debris Removal Firmware Guide-Parameter Values, Descriptions and Flowchart and that the flow rate measured by the device when the debris system is operating is above the flow marginal value. Importance of lens cleaning and debris removal contains links to some examples showing the importance of lens cleaning and debris removal and links to the TH1 and TH2 leans cleaning and debris removal procedures.

17 Nov 2004: Make sure you correctly interpret the BPDNoise.spt graph More...
Some new filters for the BPD sensor reduce the intensity of the portion of the beam used for beam positioning. As a result, when you run BPDnoise.spt the lines appear noisier because the scale of the script is not fixed.
This difference in scale changes how you analyze the graph. Just because a graph appears noisy does not mean that it is a bad result. You need to consider the percentage of variation in the higher current line, as well as the scale on the left side of the graph.
Find out how to interpret the graph: Interpreting the BPDnoise graph.

01 Mar 2004: Attention! New Thermal 2 Firmware Released for All Platforms More...
Recently, the supplier for the TH2 focus diode was replaced. The new diode is functionally equivalent, however, due to more efficient operation, the new diode requires a small change to the TH2 firmware.
All active TH2 firmware versions have been patched, so that they will work with both old and new focus diodes. The old and new firmware versions are functionally equivalent, and the fix for the new diode does not cause any changes in firmware operation.
The firmware version changes are:
| Old version | New version |
|---|---|
| 1.01h | 1.01i |
| 1.02 | 1.02b |
| 1.03b | 1.03c |
| 1.04c | 1.04d |
Note: Using the old versions of firmware can cause TH2 error 1330: Focus laser not turning on. If you see this error message on heads running V1.01h, V1.02, V1.03b, or V1.04c, the solution is to upgrade to the replacement version of TH2 firmware.
Download the latest versions from the Firmware page.
01 Mar 2004: When to use the focus parameter BaseThickness More...
BaseThickness is an MCE-based parameter located in the FOCUS subsystem. It is used on Trendsetter NEWS devices to determine if multiple instances of media are loaded in the same spot on the drum (double-picking).
Lotem Quantum devices do not use this parameter.
For information on how to set BaseThickness on Trendsetter News, refer to the following excerpt from the Trendsetter NEWS MCE firmware release notes:
Thermal Head 2 Install Procedure and Basethickness Parameter Setup
Proper use of the moving lens range is a basic requirement for host products to allow room for any bump tracking.
The head install procedure ensures that any plate thickness allowed by the product specification will work properly and have room for any bump tracking. NEWS devices support plates with thickness 0.2 to 0.3 mm. The head should be installed with an average error of 100 microns and the basethickness set to 305 if the plate loaded during the install is 205 microns thick. For example, if the head is installed to an error of +100 using a 205 micron thick plate, and then a 305 micron plate is loaded, there still will be 150 microns for plate bump tracking. In other words, one should NOT always do head install to 0 error.
The constraint is the equation: “BaseThickness” - “Thickness used to install head” equals “The error head was installed to”. Choose a BaseThickness value that is the maximum of the different thicknesses that are expected to be used. The head install procedure is as follows:

12 Jun 2003: When installing or replacing a Th2 head, check that the Z-rod properly engages the TH2 Indexing Rod More...
If the Z-rod is not fully engaging the TH2 Indexing Rod, the error will saturate when moving the Z-stage back during head install on, or the Z-rod may break. There are some rare cases where, due to the tolerances of both the Z-rod and the threaded hole in the Th2 Indexing Rod, this error may occur. This can occur anytime you are installing a Thermal 2 head.
Solution: In all cases where a TH2 head is being installed or replaced, check that the Z-rod is properly engaging the TH2 Indexing Rod.
For the detailed procedure, refer to this troubleshooting item: Error saturates when moving the Z-stage back during head install on or the Z-rod breaks.. This is also available o nthe Troubleshooting page under Installation.10 Jun 2003: Ordering Heads Using the EHR Form More...

09 Jan 2003: Do not use wpowern when setting up Staccato on a Thermal 2 head More...
When setting up Staccato with a Thermal 2 head, do not use the parameter wpowern (narrow mode power). This applies to all Thermal 2 heads that are being set up for Staccato.
Background
Unlike Thermal 1.7 heads, Thermal 2 heads do not need to use narrow mode. Therefore you should not use wpowern (power setting for narrow mode), even though this parameter still appears in the host (MPE and MCE) under hdm (head dependant media).
In older versions of MPE and MCE (including MCE version 1.20), if you change the wpowern parameter, the Thermal 2 head will use this power value. If this power value is incorrect, it can cause problems such as banding, or problems setting up the media.
In more recent versions of the MPE this problem will not occur, since changing wpower will immediately upgrade wpowern (narrow mode power).
For further information, contact Kyle Good.

15 May 2002: Caution! Wear a Static Strap When Handling Thermal Heads More...
Electro Static Discharge (ESD) has been responsible for an increasing number of preventable head failures. You must ensure that you are properly grounded when handling thermal heads, power supplies, or any of the electronics in the devices. Also, you must have your static straps periodically tested or replaced to ensure they are functioning properly. Remember that the effects of ESD are not always immediate and are not detectable until the failure occurs.
It is important to guard against ESD when removing failed heads because these heads are sent for repair and refurbishment and are eventually sent back into production. Many of the problems that these heads can experience are a result of previous damage from improper handling.
Always ensure that you are properly grounded when handling thermal heads, power supplies, or any of the electronics in the devices.
